TWO x 1 hour lessons, fully-resourced, detailed and differentiated PSHE (or possibly RE) lessons for Prevent + PSHE 2020-23 guidelines. The lessons cover how easy it is to be tricked into following a cult, rather than a genuine religious organisation. Students will learn about the differences between cults and religions, what makes a good religious leader and how these qualities differ in cult leaders’ personalities. The lessons see students investigate five different figures from Islam, Christianity, Scientology, Buddhism and Heaven’s Gate. There is also a further focus on Heaven’s Gate as a typical example of a cult. The lessons include detailed PowerPoints, information, differentiated activities, clips tasks with questions and active task (where you see which students were tricked into a cult and which weren’t). These resources have been designed to be engaging, detailed and easy to follow. The PowerPoints are in the ZIP files. The unit focuses heavily on Christianity and Islam, but also explores how conflict has both affected and been inflicted by the other largest world religions too. This was used for GCSE RS Thematic Studies AQA (9-1) Theme A (but is editable for other exam boards or KS3). An easy to use 12 mark question peer assessment grid for AQA RS 9-1 GCSE (produced originally for Spec A, but works under the same principle for other AQA specs and is editable). Can be used for any 12 mark question and has been written in student speak based on the AQA assessment materials. There is a space for students to fill in the question being assessed as well as guidance on how to give appropriate peer assessment feedback. A mega- quiz that is perfect for GCSE students revising content for the beliefs, teaching and practices aspects of their RS exam. The quiz includes some challenging (and some very challenging) revision questions for both Islam and Christianity - including quote analysis. All answers, exam board definitions (AQA) and explanations are included on each slide. This revision quiz was created for AQA Spec A (Islam and Christianity focus) but is also great for other exam boards with a focus on Islamic and Christian beliefs and practices - or could also be used as a fun way to push a top set KS3 group. This is editable, comes with instructions and has enough material to keep you going for at least an hour. 1 hour, fully resourced lesson which provides an overview and introduction to the Iluminati, investigating whether it is a real alternative religious movement or a conspiracy theory. Students always ask to learn about the Illuminati and I’ve never had an excuse to make a lesson on it until I made this alternative religions and new movements unit - so here it is! This lesson is the sixth in my ‘Alternative Religions and New Movements’ Unit - originally created for year 9, but easily amended for any KS3 / KS4 group. The lesson can easily be used in isolation, however. The lesson has been left editable and is filled with engaging, well differentiated and fun activities. It is useful for RE or as part of a Fake News Unit, or could be used as a standalone lesson as something different for a drop-down-day.
